This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Alumni preview of the Otis College of Art and Design 33rd Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show held at the Beverly Hilton. The event is always a glittering spectacle, and there isn’t a year when I don’t leave saying “That was the best one yet!” The 2015 show was inspired by water, and everything from the beach to castaways to creatures of the sea were cleverly woven into the designs.
I’ve been to and written about several shows in years past, including The Otis College of Art and Design Fashion Show 2012 and The Spirit of Otis Fashion, The Show 2014. Unfortunately, I had technical difficulties with the photos from the 2013 show. (My computer ate them! Really. It did.) This year my camera and computer are both in working order, plus I found a great place to sit. Tables are reserved for the Otis Alumni, but the one I usually grab was taken. Thankfully my daughter accompanied me and her sharp eyes spied a table right by the front of the stage! I got to see the clothes up close, which was a real treat.
Designs from the Junior Class
The show starts with the whimsical work of the Junior class. Bathing suits are always on the agenda. This year one of the senior designers from Anne Cole lead the students in a burst of vibrant colors and intricately pieced stripe suits and cover ups.
Here is a collection of garments made from recycled materials under the guidance of a mentor from Pacsun.
Kids danced on the stage in neon print bathing suits.
Designs from the Senior Class
The mood gets more serious as work by the Senior class takes the stage. Lane Bryant sponsored a collection of plus-sized garments. It’s so nice to see that the students are being encouraged to design for women of all sizes, not just models. Morgane Le Fay mentored a collection of elegant day wear.
Then there were some seriously chic coats.
Bob Mackie directed the students to create “seasonless, swoon-worthy evening looks inspired by underwater sea life and landscapes”. Did they ever. These gowns were so creative, so gorgeous, so wonderful, that I don’t really know what to say. Instead I’ll show you. Scroll down for lots, and lots, of shots.
Truly swoon worthy.
Finally, the graduating student class takes a bow and the show is over.
