Pinkie Cooper: Doggy or Dolly?

Every time I go to my local Target I take a few minutes to walk the toy aisle. It’s always fun to see what’s new in the world of dolls, but every so often I find something really exciting, like on my last visit, when I discovered an adorable new fashion doll called Pinkie Cooper.

Is it a doll? Is it an adorable doggie? No, it’s both!

A couple days after my first Pinkie Cooper sighting I found a few more at Toys R Us. It looks like this cute new fashion doll likes to travel. I suppose I should have known. After all, the tag line is “Pinkie Cooper and the Jet Set Pets”. She’s shown up in Beverly Hills and Paris, perfectly dressed for the city.

Like most fashion dolls, Pinkie has friends too. Their names are Pepper Parson and Ginger Jones.Pinkie Cooper

And her puppy friend, Li’l Pinkie, is sold separately as well.Pinkie CooperCarter Bryant, who originally conceived and designed the Bratz dolls for MGA, created this new line of adorable puppy-dollies with his sister. A friend of mine in the toy industry who knows Carter pretty well tells me that he has a number of small dogs and is absolutely in love with them. Perhaps his real dogs were the inspiration for this cute line of fashion dolls? According to this Wikipedia article Carter based the dolls on his sister’s real Cocker Spaniel, whose name is Pinkie Cooper. Pinkie must be a really cute dog, because the resulting dolls are adorable. I love everything from the packaging to the fashion design.

Carter and I were once coworkers. We both designed dolls in the Barbie Collector department at Mattel in the late 1990’s. I can tell you from personal experience that Carter is an incredibly talented designer with an eye for details. His illustrations blew me away. I’d love to see what he drew for Pinkie!  Not only did I think Carter was a great designer, he was also a really nice person. The sweetness you see in these dolls is very much part of his personality.
