I started this illustration a few weeks ago and finished it today. I’m very happy with the outcome! The dress is inspired by an old advertisement for Christian Lacroix, one of my all-time favorite designers.
One of the most difficult aspects of hand-rendered fashion illustrations is drawing and painting printed textiles. The computer’s ability to place a print into a sketch is incredibly freeing. I feel like I can finally experiment with printed garments without dreading the hours it will take to carefully paint the print in miniature on paper. For this illustration I found a small swatch of the print online, recolored it, and put it into repeat before dropping it into the sketch. It took some time, but not nearly as long as it would have to draw each flower by hand.
This is day 15 of my month-long daily drawing challenge.
